GAMAGUCHI(frame purse)

“Gamaguchi (flame purse)” made with silk kimono fabric dyed by some no sato OCHIAI in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The fabric is called “Tokyo Some Komon” (Edo Komon), produced with hand-dyeing technique designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan. As mass production with mostly automated processes is taking over the dyeing industry, we focused on presenting artisan techniques and created a product with the warmth and depth only the time-consuming hand-dyeing could produce. With people no longer wearing kimono every day, traditional dyeing is becoming a difficult craft to maintain. To make sure the technique is passed onto the future generation, a universal product for daily use beyond traditional attire was created.
